IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
FROM THE CITY OF MANNINGTON
Exceeded Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for Haloacetic Acids
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct the situation.
We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. Test results for October 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018 show that our system exceeded the standard or maximum contaminant level (MCL) for Haloacetic Acids.
The average level of Haloacetic Acids over the last four quarters was:
City of Mannington, PWSID# WV3302513 67.8
The standard for Haloacetic Acids is 60.0 ppb (parts per billion).
What Should I do?
You do not need to use an alternative (e.g. bottled) water supply. However, if you have specific health concerns, it is recommended that you consult with your doctor.
What does this mean?
This is not an immediate risk. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing Haloacetic Acids over the limit of 60 parts per billion over an extended period of time (10 years or longer) may have an increased risk of getting cancer.
What happened? What is being done?
Haloacetic Acids form when the chlorine used for disinfection interacts with traces of organic carbon molecules found in the water. Our water system purchases finished treated water from the City of Fairmont. The violation occurred at the beginning of our system. We are working with the City of Fairmont to correct the situation and to find out why this occurred. Both systems chlorinated, cleaned and flushed their systems and this, along with the cooler temperatures, resulted in the best sample reading in the last quarter that we have ever had.
